"Build a Bike" event hosted by CISCO

On Wednesday, August 15th at 11:30 a.m. something very special was about to begin for four very excited young people. The mood was "EXCITEMENT", "ANTICIPATION" and a bit of "NERVOUSNESS". You see, these youth are clients of our Supportive Housing Program and they were selected to participate in a "Build a Bike" event hosted by CISCO at Mandalay Bay Event center.

When we arrived at the event center, we were directed to our orientation room to meet with Ms. Cindy and her staff. They made us feel quite welcome. We took pictures, got our security badges and name tags that were essential in this event. They were important because they were color coded to match our team and our bike. You can imagine our surprise when we discovered that all of our team members were Korean nationals, who spoke little to no English. What a challenge...but we were up for the task and the kids were thrilled to participate in not only a multi-cultural but a multi-national event.

We were then taken to a huge room where there were squares taped off with bike parts. The mat colors matched the color coding of our various name tags. We went to our particular colored mat and waited for the entrance of our team members. When they came in we were ready to go.

We couldn't start to build our bike until we got the go ahead from the director in charge. By the way...the bike parts in front of us may or may not be ours. The trick was to first find all our bike parts somewhere in the room (talk about teamwork!). We definitely had to work as a team to get the bike built which is what the event was all about. I think we accomplished this and speaking on behalf of the children that participated, we cannot begin to express our shared appreciation and utter delight. The event was wonderful and the bikes were so greatly appreciated. When the bikes were delivered later that evening, all the kids immediately rode around their house to test out their new treasures.

Sometimes a simple "THANK YOU" just doesn't seem adequate to express the way that our children felt about their experience and the memories that they will carry from this day for the rest of their lives. On behalf of the youth of Lutheran Social Services and our Supportive Housing Program we say...
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
