VOLUNTEER

Current Volunteer Event Opportunities:

Every year, LSSN provides backpacks to area children filled with everything they will need to start the school year right. During the week of August 16th, volunteers will be needed in the morning and early afternoon to assist with the assembly of these care packages.

It is often far too easy to take what we have for granted - and Thanksgiving is meant to help us realize how blessed we truly are and to be a blessing for others. Last year, LSSN's Thanksgiving program partnered with the Housing Authority to deliver 10,000 pounds of full Thanksgiving dinners to area families, and this year we hope to do even more.

During the week of November 8th, we usually receive donations of several tons worth of food and turkeys. We anticipate needing about six people to help with the pickup and transport of this food. As a part of this pickup, it isn't uncommon for us to need to rent a U-Haul or large truck. Anyone that would like to volunteer their own truck (even pickups) to help would be especially appreciated, since this would fulfill this need.

During the week of November 15th, we then separate, organize, and assemble the food into fifty-pound dinner baskets. This usually takes place over two days: one to separate the food and one to assemble the baskets. Approximately ten volunteers will be needed for each of these two days.

Our distribution on-scene at the Housing Authority complexes will take place on Friday, November 19th, in the morning and early afternoon. We will need ten to fifteen volunteers for help. Since this work involves moving and carrying the forty to fifty pound baskets, strong backs are especially encouraged.

For many of us, the Christmas season is the happiest time of the year. For many others, though, it can be the most difficult. LSSN works hard to spread holiday joy and cheer to those that need it the most through our Adopt-A-Family program.

Starting in October, LSSN will begin seeking sponsors. We will then match preferred gift recipients with the Wish List of a client or client family for your shopping convenience. Sponsors may choose to support a family of any size, from two to even ten or more. LSSN places no minimums on what can be spent on each family, but from past experience, adopting groups, families, and individuals have spent approximately $50 to $100 per household and/or $20 to $50 per individual child. Sponsor information must be collected no later than December 1st, and all gifts must arrive at LSSN no later than December 10th.

More information will be published in our newsletters, on our website, and through local congregations as the Christmas season approaches.

During the week of December 13th, we will need six to ten volunteers to help with the final organization and distribution of the gifts.

If you are willing to answer the call to serve by volunteering for one of these holiday programs, or would like to contribute to the programs with either food or financial support, please contact Tom Maatta at Thomas@lssnv.org and Derrick Felder at derrick@lssnv.org.
